Keeping traditional African arts alive for the next generation
Our Mission
One of the primary missions of the Akpe Cultural Centre is to offer instruction in the traditional African arts to the youth of Kokrobite, to keep their own culture alive and thriving and offer them the opportunities in life these arts can provide.
Knowledge of traditional performing arts is dwindling in twenty-first-century Africa, and our founder, Maputo Mensah, is passionate about reversing that. He knows first-hand how foundational these arts can be to cementing essential community values and providing positive direction and opportunity in the lives of young people.
What We Provide
After-school and weekend classes in dance, drumming, singing, and storytelling
Free of charge for qualifying local children who maintain their grades
Breakfast and hot meals provided by the Akpe chefs
More than 50 local children currently benefit from the program
The Program
The Akpe Cultural Centre currently offers after-school and weekend classes, at no charge, to local children who keep their grades up in school and demonstrate interest and responsibility. While they are at the centre, they also receive breakfast and an occasional hot meal provided by the Akpe chefs.
At present, the Akpe Cultural Centre offers this unique benefit at no charge to more than 50 local children whose families could not otherwise afford these lessons. Come watch these classes, join in if you’d like, and witness the excitement of kids who are learning their own cultural heritage for the first time.
